Connect VS Code to your task board
Agent mode files its own follow-ups.
To connect VS Code to a task board, add Weft — a task board with an MCP server — to VS Code and sign in once. It takes about three minutes and is free for 50 tasks. After that, VS Code creates, moves and finishes tasks on your board when you ask.
Weft is the AI task manager for solo founders and small teams.
The editor most coding agents live in. With Weft connected, GitHub Copilot's agent mode reads the sprint before it edits and files what it did not finish as tasks — instead of a paragraph in a chat pane you will close.
VS Code MCP setup
VS Code MCP docs ↗Needs agent mode and any Copilot plan, free tier included. The extension registers Weft for you — nothing to configure. Rather not install one? The JSON below does the same, and “MCP: Open User Configuration” puts Weft in every workspace instead of one.
- 01
Create a free Weft account.
Weft is free for 50 tasks. Pro from $5/seat/month billed yearly.
- 02
Add Weft to VS Code — one click.
Install the Weft extensionOpens VS Code and installs the Weft server. Or configure manually:.vscode/mcp.json{ "servers": { "weft": { "type": "http", "url": "https://letsweft.com/api/mcp" } } }MCP endpointhttps://letsweft.com/api/mcp - 03
Complete the OAuth popup.
On first use, VS Code opens a browser window so you can authorize with your Weft account. Sign in once — the client remembers you after that.
- 04
Verify it works.
Open Chat, switch the mode picker to Agent, and ask: "what's on my board?". A browser window opens for OAuth the first time. "MCP: List Servers" should show weft as Running.
Try these prompts
Everything below works once you’re connected — VS Code picks the right Weft tool on its own.
- “What's on my board right now?”
- “File every TODO you left in this diff as a task in Weft.”
- “Claim the top task in Todo, then report progress as you work.”
- “What finished work is waiting for my review?”
VS Code and MCP: common questions
Does VS Code support MCP?
Yes. VS Code connects to remote MCP servers, and Weft is one: a single endpoint, https://letsweft.com/api/mcp. You sign in once in the browser; there is no API key to copy.
Where do I add an MCP server in VS Code?
In .vscode/mcp.json. The snippet in step 2 is the whole Weft entry.
Is Weft free to use with VS Code?
Yes, for up to 50 tasks, with no credit card. Pro removes the limit.
What can VS Code do on my Weft board?
Create, update, move and complete tasks, plan and run sprints, sort work into projects and search across all of it: 32 MCP tools in all.
