Weft vs Plane

Plane is open-source project management for teams, in the cloud or self-hosted.

Plane is an open-source alternative to Jira and Linear: projects, work items, cycles and modules, a wiki, intake forms, and importers from most tools. You can use its cloud or host it yourself — the Community Edition is free under the AGPL. It also runs an official MCP server, so assistants can work with it. Weft is smaller on purpose: a Scrumban board for one founder or a team of two to ten, with MCP tools designed around an AI doing the work — claiming a task, reporting progress, asking you a question when only you can decide.

When Plane is the right choice

  • You need to self-host — for compliance, an air-gapped network, or control of your data.
  • Your team is growing past ten and needs epics, initiatives, intake and a wiki in one tool.
  • You are moving off Jira, Linear, Asana or ClickUp and want an importer to do it.

When Weft is the right choice

  • You are one founder or a small team and want a board running in a minute, not a system to configure.
  • Your AI does the work: Weft’s tools let an assistant claim a task, report progress and bring you a question that waits in your Inbox.
  • You want mobile apps that keep working offline, edits included.
  • You want to start in ChatGPT: Weft is in its Plugin directory, on every plan including Free.

How to switch

Plane exports work items to CSV, Excel or JSON. Upload the CSV at Board → Import, or paste the export into your AI — bulk_create_tasks lands the whole backlog in one call.

The honest bottom line

Pick Plane if you need open source, self-hosting or a full project-management suite. Pick Weft if you want a small board your AI runs for you.
