ClickUp alternative for AI agents: a board for ChatGPT and Claude
A fair ClickUp alternative for people whose AI does the work: MCP call limits, ChatGPT and Claude setup, prices, and when to stay on ClickUp.
Weft is the AI task manager for solo founders and small teams.
By Andrei Finogeev ·
If your AI client does part of the work, a good ClickUp alternative is a small board that the agent can claim, update and finish over MCP without spending a daily call allowance. Weft is built for that: one ChatGPT app and a connector for Claude, Cursor and Codex, a 20-minute claim lease, questions that reach you in an Inbox, and completion with evidence. If your team runs docs, whiteboards, dashboards, time tracking and goals in one place, stay on ClickUp: it does all of that, and Weft does not try to.
We make Weft. Facts about ClickUp come from its official pages, checked on 3 November 2026. Facts about Trello, Linear and Todoist in the last table come from their official pages, checked on 27 October 2026.
What is ClickUp good at?
ClickUp is an everything app for work. Its pricing page lists tasks, docs and wikis, chat, whiteboards, dashboards, time tracking, Gantt charts, forms, goals and automations, with apps for iOS, Android, Mac and Windows. The Free Forever plan has unlimited members and unlimited tasks, 60 MB of storage and 5 Spaces.
Its AI story is also broad. Every plan ships with ClickUp Brain² and a monthly credit allowance. ClickUp runs an official MCP server at https://mcp.clickup.com/mcp, available on all plans, with setup guides for Claude, Claude Code, Cursor, VS Code, Windsurf, ChatGPT and others (ClickUp developer docs). ClickUp is listed in Claude’s connector directory, and in ChatGPT you can find it under Apps.
So this is not a page about ClickUp lacking AI. It is about a narrower question: what happens when an agent, not a person, is the main user of your task list.
Why do people look for a ClickUp alternative when AI does the work?
The everything app is a lot of surface for an agent
An agent that only needs “what should I do next, and where do I put the result” still lands in a workspace built around Spaces, Folders, Lists, custom fields and many views. That breadth is the point of ClickUp for a team that uses it. For a solo developer or a small team whose planning happens in ChatGPT or Claude, it is more structure than the work needs.
MCP calls are capped per day
ClickUp’s MCP documentation sets limits per rolling 24 hours, per Workspace and per client, without the Everything AI add-on:
| ClickUp plan | MCP calls per rolling 24 h (per Workspace, per client) |
|---|---|
| Free Forever | 100 |
| Core / Unlimited | 300 |
| Business | 1,000 |
| Enterprise | 5,000 |
The same page says that with the Everything AI add-on the limits match ClickUp’s public API rates. Today’s pricing page does not list that add-on by name, so check with ClickUp before you plan around it.
A hundred calls sounds like plenty until an agent reads a list, opens a few tasks, updates statuses and adds comments in one session. For a coding agent that checks in every few minutes, the cap can arrive before the work is done.
AI usage is metered in credits
On the pricing page today, Free includes a Brain² trial with 500 credits per workspace. Core includes 1K credits per user a month, Business 1.5K and Max 10K, pooled across the workspace. Extra credits cost $10 per 10K. That is a fair model if you want ClickUp’s own AI to write, summarise and run agents. If the thinking already happens in your ChatGPT or Claude subscription, you are paying for a second AI layer.
Two more limits from the MCP docs are worth knowing. There are no delete tools, “as a safety measure”, and the MCP server cannot search connected apps.
Does ClickUp work with ChatGPT and Claude?
Yes. In ChatGPT you open Apps, search for ClickUp, connect and choose the Workspaces to use. In Claude (Pro, Team, Enterprise) you add ClickUp as a connector, and ClickUp is in Claude’s directory. On Claude Free, ClickUp’s guide uses a local config file. In Claude Code the command is claude mcp add --transport http clickup https://mcp.clickup.com/mcp. Sign-in is OAuth only: ClickUp does not accept personal API keys for MCP (setup guide, MCP docs).
Weft works with the same clients, with one difference you should know about. Weft is a published app in ChatGPT on every ChatGPT plan, including Free (setup). In claude.ai and Claude Desktop, Weft is a custom connector, not a directory listing, so you paste the URL https://letsweft.com/api/mcp yourself. In Claude Code it is claude mcp add --transport http weft https://letsweft.com/api/mcp (guide). Cursor has one-click install (guide), and Codex uses a config entry plus codex mcp login weft (guide). There are 33 client setup pages in the docs.
What does Weft do differently for agents?
Weft is a Scrumban board with 32 MCP tools over Streamable HTTP. Sign-in is OAuth, so there is no key to copy; personal access tokens exist for clients without OAuth. Weft issues refresh tokens, so the client renews the sign-in itself. The board has four default columns, Backlog, Todo, Doing and Done, plus optional sprints and projects.
The difference is the loop an agent runs:
- Claim.
start_taskgives the agent a 20-minute lease.report_progressrenews it. If the agent goes quiet, the lease lapses and the task is free again. A second agent that tries the same task getsalready_claimed. - Ask.
request_inputsends you a question, with options when the answer is a choice. It reaches you in the Inbox and as a push on the mobile app. - Finish with evidence.
complete_taskrecords the outcome, artifacts such as a PR link or a file hash, what was not done, unknowns and the next step. - Review only when needed. By default a finished task goes straight to Done. It stops in your Inbox for Accept, Rework, Later or Drop only when it needs review or a verification check fails.
- An attention limit. When 5 items wait on one person (10 for a team, or 45 minutes of review),
start_taskrefuses withattention_queue_full. Agents finish and clarify before they start more.
Each OAuth client or access token is its own actor, and the board shows the client’s registered name, so you can see whether Claude Code or ChatGPT moved a card. Each connection has its own permission, full, write or read, and you can disconnect it at any time.
Weft has no AI credits of its own. The thinking happens in the AI client you already pay for. More on the loop in the claim loop article and several agents on one board.

Read the Free row carefully. On raw numbers, ClickUp’s free MCP allowance is larger than Weft’s: 100 calls a day per client against 200 calls a month. If you want a free plan for heavy agent use, ClickUp’s is more generous. Weft Pro has no monthly call cap; a rate limit of 300 requests a minute per user applies.
What does Weft not do?
- No docs, wikis, whiteboards, chat, dashboards, goals or forms.
- No time tracking, Gantt charts or timelines.
- No REST API, webhooks or CLI. MCP is the only programmatic way in.
- No GitHub or Slack integration, and no desktop app.
- No AI of its own. If you want an assistant inside the task tool, ClickUp Brain is that and Weft is not.
- No ClickUp importer. You move tasks with a file and your AI, as below.
How much does each cost?
ClickUp’s pricing page today shows one table: Free Forever $0; Core $9 per user a month billed yearly (regular price $12); Business $17 billed yearly (regular price $25); Enterprise by quote; Max $100 billed yearly (regular price $120). On 27 October the page also carried an older Unlimited/Business table; that table is gone today.
Weft has two plans (pricing). Free has 50 tasks and 200 AI calls a month. Pro is $7 per seat a month or $60 per seat a year, flat per seat. Restoring from trash is a Pro feature.
For a team of three that only needs a board for agents and people, that is $9 × 3 = $27 a month on ClickUp Core billed yearly, against $60 × 3 = $180 a year on Weft Pro. The fair comparison depends on how much of ClickUp you would actually use.
How do I move from ClickUp to Weft?
- Export your tasks from ClickUp. Its help center describes a CSV export of task data from Settings → Imports / Exports; you can export a smaller set of Lists if the workspace is large.
- Create a Weft account and connect your AI client: ChatGPT, Claude Code, Cursor or Codex.
- Paste the export, or the part you still need, into the chat and ask your AI to create the tasks in Weft. It uses
bulk_create_tasks, which creates many tasks in one all-or-nothing call. - Ask the AI to sort tasks into Backlog and Todo, and into projects if you work for more than one client.
- Set each connection’s permission (full, write or read) in Settings, and give your agents a first task to claim with
start_task. - Keep ClickUp running for docs and anything else Weft does not do until you are sure what you need.
Weft’s built-in importer, free on every plan, reads Linear, Jira and Notion CSV and Trello JSON. If some of your work lives in those tools too, see Linear, Jira, Notion or Trello.
When should you stay on ClickUp?
- Your team uses docs, whiteboards, dashboards or time tracking in ClickUp every day. Splitting them out costs more than it saves.
- You want AI inside the task tool, with credits shared across the workspace, rather than in a separate chat client.
- You need Mac or Windows desktop apps, Gantt charts, or enterprise controls such as SSO, SCIM and audit logs.
- Your agents stay well under the daily MCP cap on your plan, and you do not need claims, leases or an attention limit.
- You want a connector that is listed in Claude’s directory today.
What other ClickUp alternatives have MCP?
If Weft is not the fit, these also run hosted MCP servers. Facts from their official pages, checked on 27 October 2026.
| Tool | Claude directory | Free plan | Cheapest paid |
|---|---|---|---|
| Trello | Yes | Up to 10 collaborators and 10 boards per Workspace; MCP on all plans | Standard $5 per user a month yearly, $6 monthly |
| Linear | Yes | Unlimited members, 2 teams, 250 issues | Basic $10 per user a month, billed yearly |
| Todoist | Yes | Beginner: 5 personal projects; MCP available | Pro $5 a month yearly, $7 monthly |
For the full field, see MCP task managers compared, and the sister articles on the Linear, Asana, Todoist and Motion alternatives.
- ClickUp already has an MCP server. Why would I switch?
- You may not need to. ClickUp’s MCP server works with ChatGPT, Claude and Cursor on every plan. Switch if you hit the daily call cap, if you only use the task part of ClickUp, or if you want agents to claim tasks with a lease, ask you questions and finish with evidence. See ClickUp’s MCP docs.
- Is Weft’s free plan enough for an agent?
- For trying it, yes: 50 tasks and 200 AI calls a month. For daily agent work it is tight, and ClickUp’s free MCP allowance of 100 calls a day per client is larger. Weft Pro removes the monthly call cap for $7 per seat a month.
- Is Weft in Claude’s connector directory like ClickUp?
- No. In claude.ai and Claude Desktop, Weft is a custom connector: you add
https://letsweft.com/api/mcpyourself and sign in with OAuth. In ChatGPT, Weft is a published app on every plan. Claude Code uses one command (guide). - Can I keep ClickUp docs and use Weft for tasks?
- Yes. Weft does not replace docs, whiteboards or dashboards. You can keep the docs where they are and move only the task list your agents work from.
- Does Weft charge for AI like ClickUp Brain?
- No. Weft has no built-in AI and no credits. The reasoning happens in your ChatGPT, Claude, Cursor or Codex client, and Weft stores the tasks, claims, questions and results.
- Can an agent delete my tasks in Weft?
- An agent can move tasks to the trash, not delete them for good. Trashed tasks stay 30 days; restoring them is a Pro feature. You can also give a connection write or read permission instead of full.
