Asana alternative for AI agents in ChatGPT and Claude
Weft is an Asana alternative for solo founders and small teams whose AI agents claim tasks, ask questions and hand back evidence over MCP.

If ChatGPT, Claude, Cursor or Codex now does part of your work, a good Asana alternative is a board your AI can work on directly: it claims a task so a second agent does not duplicate it, asks you when it is stuck, and closes the task with evidence you can check. Weft is built for that loop, for solo founders and small teams. If you run portfolios, company goals and workload planning across many people, Asana is the better fit and you should stay.
We make Weft. Facts about Asana come from its official pages, checked on 3 November 2026. Facts about Trello, Linear and Todoist come from their official pages, checked on 27 October 2026.
What is a good Asana alternative if your AI does part of the work?
The question has changed. A few years ago, an Asana alternative meant a cheaper or simpler place for people to type tasks. Now many solo founders and small teams plan in a chat with ChatGPT or Claude, and let a coding agent do the work in Claude Code, Cursor or Codex. The board is no longer mostly read by people. Agents read it too, and write to it.
That shifts what matters. An agent needs to know which task is free, take it without colliding with another agent, ask a person a question only when it has to, and leave proof of what it did. A person needs to see that at a glance, without opening five chat windows.
Weft is a Scrumban board built around those steps. It has one MCP endpoint, https://letsweft.com/api/mcp, with 32 tools, OAuth sign-in and default columns Backlog, Todo, Doing and Done. Sprints are optional. Projects group tasks lightly. MCP is the open protocol that lets AI clients use tools like these.
Why do people leave Asana?
Asana is mature software for organizations. Its own pricing page shows where the depth lives: unlimited portfolios, goals, time tracking and resource management that "balances workloads within a portfolio" are listed on the Advanced plan, at $24.99 per user a month billed annually or $30.49 billed monthly (Asana pricing). Enterprise adds universal resource management and capacity planning across the organization.
If you are one person, or three, much of that structure is overhead. You do not need a portfolio to see your work, and you do not plan anyone's workload. The cost is per seat: Asana Starter is $10.99 per user a month billed annually, or $13.49 billed monthly. The free Personal plan lets "2 users collaborate for free".
The second reason is newer. When ChatGPT or Claude does the planning, and an agent does the work, the useful part of a task manager is the contract between agent and board, not the number of views. That is the part this article compares.
Does Asana work with ChatGPT and Claude?
Yes, and well. Asana runs a hosted MCP server at https://mcp.asana.com/v2/mcp with OAuth sign-in and Streamable HTTP. Its docs list Claude, ChatGPT and coding clients such as Claude Code, Codex, Cursor and VS Code (Using Asana’s MCP server). The older beta endpoint at /sse is deprecated.
In ChatGPT, Asana is an app you install from ChatGPT’s app directory. Asana says it turns chats into projects, tasks and follow-ups, checks status across projects and portfolios, and assigns and updates work (ChatGPT + Asana). In Claude, Asana is in Anthropic’s connectors directory, made by Asana and marked Anthropic verified (Asana in Claude).
Asana also has AI of its own. AI Studio builds no-code AI automations for intake, routing and approvals, and is available on Starter, Advanced, Enterprise and Enterprise+ (AI Studio). The pricing page lists AI Teammates on Starter and above too.
What Asana’s MCP page does not state: which plans can use the MCP server, its rate limits, or the tool list (it says to run tools/list). We found nothing in its MCP docs about claiming a task with a lease, asking a person a question from the agent, or recording evidence when a task is finished. That does not mean those are impossible with comments and custom fields, only that Asana does not describe them as part of the MCP contract.
How does Weft handle an agent’s work?
Weft’s MCP tools are shaped as a loop, so every client follows the same steps:
- Claim. start_task gives the agent a 20-minute lease and moves the task to Doing. A second agent that tries the same task gets
already_claimed. - Keep it alive. report_progress renews the lease. If the agent dies and goes quiet, the lease lapses and the task is free again for someone else.
- Ask. request_input puts a question to the person, with options when the answer is a choice. It reaches them in the Weft Inbox and as a mobile push, and the agent keeps its claim while it waits.
- Hand back evidence. complete_task records the outcome, artifacts (a URL, a commit, a file hash), what was not done, unknowns and a suggested next step.
- Review only when needed. By default a completed task goes straight to Done. It stops in your Inbox for Accept, Rework, Later or Drop only when the task needs review or a verification check fails.
There is one more guard. If too much finished work is already waiting on you (5 items for one person, 10 for a team, or 45 minutes of review), start_task refuses with attention_queue_full. The agent is told to finish or clarify instead of starting more. Your attention is the limit, not the agent’s speed.
Each OAuth client and each access token is its own actor, and the board shows the client’s registered name. You can give each connection full, write or read rights, and disconnect it at any time. We wrote more about this in the claim loop article and several AI agents on one board.

What does a small team actually pay?
Take three people who want paid features. On Asana Starter that is 3 × $10.99 = $32.97 a month billed annually, or 3 × $13.49 = $40.47 billed monthly. On Weft Pro it is 3 × $7 = $21 a month, or 3 × $60 = $180 a year. Asana’s price includes AI Studio and timeline views that Weft does not have; Weft does not include AI of its own, because you bring ChatGPT, Claude or another client.
What about other Asana alternatives?
Weft is not the only option with an MCP server. Three others, from facts checked on 27 October 2026:
| Tool | Hosted MCP | In Claude’s directory | Free plan and cheapest paid |
|---|---|---|---|
| Trello | Yes, OAuth only | Yes | Free: up to 10 collaborators per Workspace; Standard $5/user/mo billed annually |
| Linear | Yes, OAuth or API key | Yes | Free: 250 issues; Basic $10/user/mo billed yearly |
| Todoist | Yes, OAuth | Yes | Free Beginner plan; Pro $5/mo billed yearly; Business $8/user/mo yearly |
Linear suits software teams who want issues and cycles; Todoist suits personal task lists; Trello suits simple shared boards. We compare them in Linear alternative, Todoist alternative and ClickUp alternative.
When should you stay on Asana?
Stay on Asana if any of these is true. Asana is the better product for these, and Weft does not do them:
- You manage portfolios, company goals or workload across many people. Weft has none of these.
- You plan with timelines and Gantt charts. Weft has no timeline view.
- Your workflows depend on approvals, intake forms, rules or AI Studio automations inside the tool.
- You need a desktop app, Salesforce or Power BI integrations, SAML or SCIM. Weft has no desktop app, no REST API, no webhooks and no Slack or GitHub integration.
- You want your Claude connector from Anthropic’s directory rather than adding a custom connector.
- Your organization already runs on Asana and the AI work is a small part of it. Asana’s MCP server and ChatGPT app already cover reading and updating tasks.
When is Weft the better choice?
- You are one person or a small team, and most work is planned or done through ChatGPT, Claude, Cursor or Codex.
- You run more than one agent and need them not to pick up the same task.
- You want finished agent work to arrive with evidence, and to be asked only when a decision is really yours.
- You want a flat price: $7 per seat a month, or $60 a year, and a free plan of 50 tasks and 200 AI calls a month.
- You work from your phone too: iOS and Android apps carry the Inbox and its questions.
How do I move from Asana to Weft?
Weft’s importer reads CSV from Linear, Jira and Notion and JSON from Trello, on every plan. It does not read Asana files directly, so the route goes through your AI client:
- In Asana, export the project you want to move to CSV (Asana on CSV export).
- Create a free Weft account and connect your AI client: ChatGPT, Claude Code, Cursor or Codex. In Claude Code it is one command:
claude mcp add --transport http weft https://letsweft.com/api/mcp. - Sign in with OAuth when the client asks. There is no key to copy.
- Paste the CSV into the chat and ask the AI to create the tasks with bulk_create_tasks, mapping Asana sections to Backlog, Todo, Doing and Done, and Asana projects to Weft projects.
- Check the board on the web or phone, then ask your agent to call get_my_work and start the first task.
- Keep Asana read-only for a week before you cancel, in case something did not come across.
Move only the work you still need; finished projects can stay in Asana as an archive. Weft has setup pages for 33 AI clients, and the docs cover the tools in detail.
- Asana already has an MCP server and a ChatGPT app. Why switch?
- You may not need to. If Asana’s structure fits your team, its MCP server and ChatGPT app let AI read and update tasks. Weft is for the case where agents do the work: it adds a claim with a lease, questions to the person, and evidence on completion as part of the MCP tools.
- Is Weft in Claude’s connectors directory like Asana?
- No. In claude.ai and Claude Desktop, Weft is added as a custom connector with the URL https://letsweft.com/api/mcp. Claude Code uses one
claude mcp addcommand. Asana is in Anthropic’s directory. - Does Weft have AI built in, like Asana AI Studio?
- No. Weft has no AI credits of its own. Planning and work happen in your AI client, such as ChatGPT, Claude, Cursor or Codex, and Weft keeps the board, the claims and the evidence.
- Can Weft replace Asana portfolios, goals or timelines?
- No. Weft has projects and optional sprints, and no portfolios, goals, workload views or Gantt charts. If you rely on those, stay on Asana.
- What happens if an agent crashes halfway through a task?
- Its 20-minute lease stops being renewed, the lease lapses, and the task becomes free for another agent. Until then, a second agent trying the same task gets
already_claimed. - Is there a free plan?
- Yes: 50 tasks and 200 AI calls a month, with ChatGPT on every ChatGPT plan including Free. Pro is $7 per seat a month or $60 a year. See pricing.
